The classroom is the greatest form of dictatorship in the world. You will obey or you will fail. Most kids learn from an early age that class participation is essential to class harmony. Kids figure this out quickly when they are unruly and disrupt classroom rules. Although it’s a good thing to maintain a cohesive learning environment, it can easily be abused to great magnitude. By the time kids get into high school there is a greater expectation of social pressures, peer pressure, and performance pressures both academically and competitively. Merit gets them where they want to go, and that merit is measured by their acceptance of what their teachers expect of them.
At this point it is a simple matter to inject non-core teaching tools into the classroom. Young minds quickly absorb behaviors and reflect those ideals on social media. That creates a feedback loop that reinforces the same concepts. If those concepts are tainted by bias from an instructor, the kids will learn that bias and integrate it into their personal world view.
Once in college the stakes increase massively. Now the students balance the need for their own personal expression against the cost of tuition. Peer pressure, totalitarian teaching tools, and social media grind in new ideas that can often completely transform a student’s original personality into drone like copies of their instructors.
Attempts to speak up and voice their opinion are like fighting the gang leader. It results in the confederation of the remaining students against one, and further bolsters the instructor’s position of authoritative and unquestionable power.
How did politics, power, racism, and religious fanaticism make their way into the modern American classroom? This book is required reading for my undergraduate degree and actively harms students in preparing for counseling people from diverse backgrounds. Rather than provide an objective or balanced approach to the sensitive topic of multicultural counseling, the authors write from an explicitly subjective point of view in favor of Leftist ideology and identity politics, making a great effort to emphasize the flaws and "inherent bias" within "White" Americans. In addition to using offensive stereotypical terminology and examples when framing various cultures, the authors fail to provide any operational definitions for their terminology, practical and actionable steps toward accomplishing a multicultural perspective, and a variety of sources that both agree and disagree with their viewpoint (which is all that this textbook can offer due to its subjectivity).
The only potential this book holds within the subject of multicultural counseling is as an example of what NOT to say/do when attempting to tackle the subject. There are so many other texts that aim and accomplish the goal of informing students about culturally sensitive topics within a therapeutic setting, do yourself a favor and read those instead of this.

• Joseph Bruno, Dean of Students, Francis W. Parker School: “So, I’ve been the Dean for four years. During Pride -- we do a Pride Week every year -- I had our LGBTQ+ Health Center come in [to the classroom]. They were passing around butt-plugs and dildos to my students -- talking about queer sex, using lube versus using spit.”
• Bruno: “They're just, like, passing around dildos and butt-plugs. The kids are just playing with ‘em, looking at ‘em…They're like, ‘How does this butt-plug work? How do we do – like, how does this work?’ That's a really cool part of my job.”
• Bruno: “We had a Drag Queen come in -- pass out cookies and brownies and do photos.”
[CHICAGO – Dec. 7, 2022] Project Veritas released a new video today exposing a high-ranking private school official, Joseph Bruno, who admitted that he teaches underage children about sex with items such as “butt-plugs” and “dildos.”
Bruno, who works as the Dean of Students at an elite school in Chicago called Francis W. Parker, said that these were the items brought into the classroom by an LGBTQ+ group.
“So, I’ve been the Dean for four years. During Pride -- we do a Pride Week every year -- I had our LGBTQ+ Health Center come in [to the classroom]. They were passing around butt-plugs and dildos to my students -- talking about queer sex, using lube versus using spit,” Bruno said.
The school administrator claimed that this educational practice is one of the reasons he enjoys his current employment.
“The kids are just playing with ‘em, looking at ‘em [butt-plugs and dildos] … They're like, ‘How does this butt-plug work? How do we do – like, how does this work?’ That's a really cool part of my job,” he said.
Bruno also said he has invited a Drag Queen to the school.

A reply from the school to Daily Mail reads in part as follows:
'He was filmed without his knowledge or permission while describing one example of our inclusive, LGBTQ+ affirming, and comprehensive approach to sex education. Veritas deceptively edited the video with malicious intent'
